Aubrey

The Atlanta Redbirds arrived in Philly on Saturday at one p.m., then quickly bussed the players over to the team hotel for check-in before their four p.m. walk-through. Aubrey had been working with Richard since summer, fine tuning the travel process for the team to ensure that all of their needs were met when they arrived in a city for a road game. Reservations for hotels and catering had to be scheduled months in advance, and coordinating that for about 155 players, coaches and support staff was a monumental task. But Richard was a hard-working guy who truly loved the Redbirds and everything about them, and his core team was one that Aubrey considered to be the best in the business. They were good about anticipating needs and making sure the trips always ran smoothly, allowing the Redbirds' coaches and players to focus on their number one priority each Sunday: winning the football game.

After hanging around to help Richard and his team set up a hotel banquet hall for the team’s dinner, Aubrey went upstairs to her room to shower and change. The Atlanta Hawks were also in town for a game against the Philadelphia 76ers, and although there were usually no extra-curricular activities scheduled for any member of the Redbirds on the night before a game, Alfred had made an exception and invited Aubrey and Drew to attend the basketball game with him, maybe as an attempt to add a little bit more cordiality to their sibling relationship. Aubrey wasn't convinced it would work, considering that Drew had wavered between cordial and salty toward her for her entire life, but she’d give it a shot for her father.

Aubrey, Alfred, and Drew rode together from the team hotel the short distance to the Wells Fargo Center, which also was home to Philly’s NHL team and sat on the same property as the city's professional football stadium and baseball park. Aubrey loved the design and planning that went into housing them all in one location, and the city had added a SEPTA stop to the campus, which allowed Philadelphia sports fans to simply catch a subway train down to the arena. Atlanta had had a similar setup until the baseball team moved to Cumberland, although a lot more people drove in Atlanta versus catching the Marta.

When they arrived at the game, Aubrey, Alfred, and Drew followed the usher down the baseline and took their courtside seats, then immediately ordered drinks and snacks from the attendant. The game had already started, but was still early in the first quarter. "Thanks for bringing us here, Daddy," Aubrey said, leaning over to kiss her father on the cheek.

"Yeah, thanks Pops." Drew tapped Alfred on the knee.

"You're both very welcome. I'm glad we could come out and enjoy something as a family."

Aubrey settled into her seat and watched the game, enjoying seeing the action and athletes up close from the front row. The size of professional basketball players were always jarring in person, unlike most football players.
